We all want to become more authentic and true to ourselves. When searching for a career or calling use these techniques adapted from the movie and book to help you find it.

Eat

Find pleasure in your craft and journey.

Nourish your soul with things you find pleasurable. What things move you and create a positive emotional reaction?

Research and shadow someone in your desired field. Just like when you’re eating something new, try it to see if you like it.

Fill your mind and soul with new experiences.

Pray

Go inward and still your mind. Begin writing about your ideal career situation.

Envision it and don’t censor your writing. Let it flow and you’ll soon see patterns emerging.

Distract yourself from stress by listening to a meditation or soothing music.

Get a massage, and feel tension melt away while opening your mind and heart to new inspiration.

Pray on it – if it comforts you.

Love

Love the process

Know that you’re not just searching for a career, you’re looking for yourself.

Don’t pass negative judgments on your ideas. Say yes to them and think them through. Give them a chance to develop.

Love yourself unconditionally and surround yourself with loving and supportive people.

You don’t have to travel across the globe to find yourself. You just have to be present, open and welcoming when you decide to show up. Embrace your positive emotions whenever they are present and make note of any patterns that emerge. Such as, “I get so excited talking to people about how to market themselves better” or “I love making floral arrangements and personalizing them for others.” When these patterns and positive emotions occur they mean you’re on the right track.

Are you tired of being weak in your spirit? Are you run down and sick? Are you not getting enough sleep and nourishment?

I have been there. For almost two years after my daughter was born, I focused solely on her, my husband, and my job. I threw myself into the role of working mother and began comparing and judging my success based on my mother, grandmothers, and previous generations.

My mother and mother-in-law were both working moms who came to the U.S. from Puerto Rico in the ’60s. After they got married and had children they continued to work, many times doing multiple jobs, outside of the home to help their hardworking husbands make ends meet. They kept many Puerto Rican traditions of food, music, dance and family — including taking on all of the responsibility of work inside the home. They did it all. Todo. Without one complaint or day off.

I looked up to these Superwomen and used them as my standard. I compared my cooking, cleaning, and childrearing to them. Little did I know, they secretly were overworked, depressed, ignored their health and felt pressure to be perfect because of tradition.

For too long, I did the same thing. I didn’t think twice about where my next breath was coming from because I really didn’t appreciate that each breath is a gift.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

To change things for myself, I started to think about what my family and I truly deserve. Shifting my logic helped me kick into gear a healthier lifestyle.

I acknowledge that my body has not been pushed to its fullest potential with exercise and that I have not made sure that it rests. Like a neglected child, I have not spent time loving my body. I never saw exercise and rest as serving my family when it actually does.

My daughter deserves an energetic and happy mother. I really notice a difference when I play with my daughter after taking some time for myself and find that I am more focused, energetic and loving towards her. Because my needs are met, I am in a better position to meet hers.

My husband deserves a fun, happy, sexy wife. I am more loving towards him after I had been more loving towards myself.

I deserve to show myself off and be proud of who I am.

I want to project a positive self-image to other women and girls.

It’s time to come out of my shell and declare that I am a strong, energetic, beautiful and amazing woman.

I am strength

I am love

I am me

So are you.

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity… It turns problems into gifts, failures into success, the unexpected into perfect timing, and mistakes into important events. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.”

—Melodie Beattie

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I would like to reflect on what gratitude really means. Everywhere I turn, the focus or media noise has been on our many floating disappointments. From the economic failures of our markets and our bank accounts to our unfulfilling or debilitating jobs, and our lives filled with endless lists of needs.

Let’s take a moment to check in with ourselves. Close your eyes and take a deep breath. How deeply can you breathe? Some people have a hard time sustaining one deep breath, so enjoy a few. Center your mind on a person in your life whose smile you love to see the most. You just can’t get enough of their smile. Do you see it in your mind? Does it make you smile too?

While in this peaceful state, take a moment to run through your loved ones’ faces. See each person who warms your heart and keeps it beating; the people you are here to enjoy and those you would sacrifice everything for. When each person comes into your mind, pause, and say a silent “Thank You” for them being in your life and bringing you constant joy. Thank them for the experiences you have shared and for the future ones to come. If you are fortunate enough to see them in your daily life, give them a deeper and longer hug than you usually do. They will feel your love and it will warm their heart too. If you are worlds apart, send them a note and make their day.

Enjoy each day’s present as it was intended. As if you are opening a new surprise gift each day. Now check in with yourself again. What economic crisis?

Many warm thanks to you for reading.

Until next time,

Boni
